Alpines
Originally Alpine Plants all grew above the tree line in mountainous regions. They are adapted to growing in poor soil in very harsh conditions. Generally they need a well drained soil.
The term is now used to describe “rockery plants” however they have many more uses than on a rockery. Bowls, troughs and sinks make great alpine displays and many alpine plants are used along the edge of paths, etc
We grow our alpines in a blended mix of multi-purpose compost, John Innes #2 and horticultural sharp sand. The exact ratios are varied as to each particular plants preferences with other substrates added as required. We top-dress most alpines with grit to prevent excess moisture around the base of the plant though this may be removed for shipping.
Although we use a special mix to grow our alpines, most will grow very well in a good quality multi-purpose compost, preferably with some added sand and grit for increased drainage.
