Description
Schizostylis coccinea Tambara provides excellent autumn colour with its exotic looking pink blooms which, incidentally, make an excellent cut flower. They prefer a sheltered site with moist but well drained soil in full sun and are fully hardy in most of the UK. They resent drying out completely in summer so we would recommend ensuring there is plenty of compost in the planting hole. In very exposed northern and eastern areas they will benefit from mulching.
Schizostylis are rhizomatous and slowly forms a large clump. They are semi-evergreen and may even be evergreen in milder years. The slender, lanceolate leaves grow up to 40cm long by 1cm wide with long flower stems which are excellent for cutting. They also look magnificent in large pots on patios where they give welcome colour in the autumn when exotic flowers are scarce. In milder years they may continue flowering into the winter. We recommend every garden has at least one variety of Kaffir Lily.
