Description
Liatris spicata is an exotic looking perennial plant with fine grassy foliage and tall spikes of mauve flowers which unusually open from the top down. It is native to the prairies of east & south USA but will tolerate damp conditions as well as dry, sandy soils though prolonged winter wet can cause the corms to rot. It prefers positions in full sun but will grow almost as well in semi shade. They die down in the autumn before shooting again from the underground corms in the spring. Over the years a single corm will slowly increase to form a clump although we recommend planting in groups for the fastest impact.
It looks best grown in clumps amongst Echinacea, Grasses and Rudbeckia. Liatris spicata is valuable to a number of pollinators.
