Description
Thyme ‘Doone Valley’ loves well drained soils in full sun though it is more tolerant of winter wet than many other thymes. When in full sun the golden variegation increases until almost all leaves are golden yellow. In less sun the leaves turn greener exponentially. Thymus x Citriodorus ‘Doone Valley is an evergreen sub shrub which forms dense mats of colourful, aromatic foliage. It is tolerant of occasional crushing making it ideal for growing amongst paving or at the edges of paths where it will release a lemon thyme fragrance when stepped on.
For best results it prefers well drained alkaline to neutral soils though it is fairly tolerant of most conditions. It is perfectly suited for planting in Mediterranean gardens, rockeries, kitchen gardens, cottage gardens and planters. The leaves add a lovely citrus tang to dishes as well as the usual thyme fragrance.
A hardy plant which should survive normal winter conditions outside, especially with protection from the hardest frosts. If grown in pots it is recommended to place in a sheltered position for the winter.
