Description
Salvia jamensis Nachtvlinder is normally evergreen but will shed its leaves in hard winters. The mid green leaves are ovate to elliptic and 2-3cm long and blackcurrant scented. The stunning purple to mauve flowers appear all summer long and normally into November and are very popular with pollinating insects.
Do not cut back in the Autumn. It is best to wait until the new shoots appear before cutting back in the Spring. This will give the greatest frost protection to the new growth. Although normally hardy in well drained soil we find Salvia jamensis Nachtvlinder grows best in a sheltered position. A good dry mulch in late autumn is beneficial. If underplanted in the rose garden it is said to help protect against mildew and blackspot.
