Description
This is our favourite Lobelia. Dark bronze green foliage produces spikes of bright pink flowers from mid summer through to the first frosts (cut back spikes once flowering has finished for repeat flowering). It is a real feature plant in both mixed borders and pots/troughs. It will grow in shade or part shade (light woodland conditions) but the narrow ovate leaves may lose the bronze colouring.
Although often treated as an annual, Lobelia speciosa Starship Deep Rose is hardy. It appreciates a moist but well drained soil with a mulch during winter. This clump forming, deciduous perennial Lobelia will produce more and more flower spikes each year. No part of the plant is edible and it can be an irritant for some people so it is recommended to wear gloves whilst handling.
